Hi, I have been exercising my dogs using a mountain bike for around 15 years now. I started with and adult size scooter but found that the bike was a much better option for me. I have alot of cycle paths and open hillside nearby so I am quite lucky. My 2 Northern Inuits Elvis and Ray absolutely love to run... more

Missy's Story
by Pate

Missy had belonged to an old lady and lived with her in her apartment for the last five years of the old dear's life. When their mum passed on, the kids couldn't cope with Missy so they put her straight into Battersea. There she lived for the next two years. We went along to Battersea after the death of our darling Spotty, passed the interview and were told we could have any one of their jacks. We said Spotty lived to 18 so we were prepared to take an older one as we know they lived a long time... more

Training Tip - follow the leader
« Thread Started on Feb 1, 2009, 10:38am »

I have 6 dogs, I have trained all my dogs to follow the leader and work them all off lead. Whenever I take my dogs out I always work them close, if you let dogs go too far away from you they can go conveniently deaf! Dogs always presume you are walking in a straight line, so I do loads of quick and unpredictable direction changes, which encourages the dogs to keep a very close eye on me as they never know where I am going. I might turn around and head back the way we just came, or sharp right or left turns, sometimes diagonal. Whenever your dogs look at you they are checking in, so always make a point of praising. The way dogs learn - if they are rewarded for something they are more likely to do it again, the more they 'check in' they more control you have over them. If I am down the woods and the go out of my sight around a corner (they may only be 10 feet in front of me) I either hide behind a tree, or shoot off down a side path - they are back looking for me within seconds. Keeps them on their toes, and the next corner we come to even if they are only a few feet in front, they stop and wait to see what I am doing. Follow the leading is good fun for the dogs and really boosts your control. If your dogs range too far, try starting with a long 26ft extended lead, so you have control over the situation, until they get the hang of it, even if dogs are off lead, you should never let them work any further away than the 26ft circumference for maximum control. Try it out and you will be amazed at the results.
Happy training.

Hi Karen,

great post [image]

I've been doing something similar with our Susi to get her in the following mode.
I normally wear a training lead across my body and go out in the garden with her following me. I then will do stuff like going round & round the rotary washing line with her following. We will do this quite a few times around other obstacles and then head out into town.
I do the same zig zagging around lamposts etc and it does work.
Keeps her focused on me and thinking what's this mad woman going to do next!

Mine tend to follow the leader which is Sophia :-)

What she does the rest tend to copy, when I train a new dog I always have Sophia to help.

Brilliant post :-)

I do this all the time to Ami....as she likes to predict where we are going to walk (she knows that I stay on the paths)...its always good to have a solid recall too, just in case you spot something that the dog doesn't (like a deer)

I do the same thing, mine are never far away, mind you one does tend to range but she is only young and get a bit confused when left on own.
